The Entomology Group

The Entomology group at The Pirbright Institute studies viruses that are spread by insects and ticks to and between humans, livestock and wildlife. By understanding the transmission and ecology of these viruses we predict their future distribution and design new ways of monitoring and controlling disease outbreaks.

We carry out projects in both the field and laboratory with partners based in both the UK and overseas. The results of these studies are published in international, peer-reviewed journals. In addition, we also work closely with policy groups during outbreaks of viruses to assist in science-based decision making. This is complemented by our work with the media and in promoting public understanding of science.

The Entomology group also maintains insect and tick colonies as a UK National Capability funded by the BBSRC.
