The Pirbright Institute is undergoing a renaissance thanks to significant financial investment in its Surrey campus from the UK government via the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC). The transformation will establish The Pirbright Institute as the foremost state-of-the-art institute in the world for fundamental and applied research on some of the most devastating viruses of farmed animals.
New bio-containment facilities are already in use to support in vivo
research into diseases affecting large animals. Phase one of the site redevelopment is to construct a high bio-containment laboratory complex, which is expected to be handed over from the contractors in early 2014. Phase two, which includes facilities to support research into poultry diseases, is expected to be complete around 2016. Further developments are planned to provide commercial space, a conference centre, accommodation and social facilities.
